volio
furniture design for dietiker, stein am rhein, switzerland
Volio is a family of chairs designed for a Swiss furniture manufacturer, Dietiker. Volio is designed with the concept
of “deceiving form” in mind. The upholstery is hidden behind the thin profi le of the chair through a contoured bowl-like
structure, resulting in an unexpected comfort. The idea of unexpected surprise is shown again in the use of the “slit” on
the seating surface. The slit opens up when a person is seated, allowing for a larger surface to emerge. Four different pieces
complete the family : a recliner, lounge chair, straight chair, and stool.

transitive light system
lighting design for mizar lighting, badoere di morgano, italy
We, as men living in a civilized world and inside a vast cityscape that is fi lled with uncountable number of artifi cial light that
each produce their own amounts intensity and color, accept and adopt to this chaotic parade of artifi ciality everyday. Still, in a
larger scale, we are governed by the schedule of the nature even inside of the largest metropolitan environment: routinely, we get up
when the sun comes up, we got to bed when it becomes dark. We are living between the two worlds: the world of natural lights and the world
of artifi cial lights that take turn and overlap with each other continually. As we live through the day, we constantly switch between
the natural lights and the artifi cial lights. For example, we get up in the morning under the morning sun, and go to the bathroom, turn
on the light is completely different from the morning light from minutes ago. We get out to the house to the daylight, and then to the
underground subway station which is, again, a completely artifi cial light environment that is different from the daylight. When the sun
is about to come down, the color of the sky changes dramatically from the color of the sky during the day and during the morning. At the
sunset, the contrast between the natural and the artifi cial lights become very apparent. Various hues of lights of the city turn on
and make a contrast with the sunset. As we make this numerous environmental changes throughout the day, we have grown to be customized
and numb to the changes of our environment. Are we giving up the beauty of the nature that are still available to us in our daily
lives in the cityscape?

topiade
facade architecitre for louis vuitton, paris, france
supervised by clino t. castelli, milan italy
Topiade is a lay over facade structure designed to enable a
renewal of an existing retail store building without major
reconstructions. The concept of Topiade was created by
identifying central attributes of the famous French fashion
brand, Louis Vuitton : Luxury, French, and Craftsmanship.
The designs that we produced were of this nature and could be
thought of as conduits to the outside and the inside. Simply
the goal was to create a LV building “alive” and to make it so
that people are able to experience this “aliveness” each day that
they own and use a LV product.
A comprehensive research was carried out on the design, brand
perception, brand identity, global marketing and sales, and
competitor strategy before the generation of the concept which
suggest a slight shift in the current art direction of Louis Vuitton.
4 independent concepts with a total of 12 permutations of these concepts
was investigated. Each of these designs addressed the needs of
expanding the idea of LV façade design, the use of topiary art
as well as pushing further with the idea of modular facade systems
applicable to Louis Vuitton.
Topiade brings to the facade of the building a vertical version of
the luxurious and traditional French garden that redefine Louis Vuitton's virtue. Several variants are proposed within the concept. Real topiary blocks are arranged on the facade, behind them is a net of water / nutrient feeding system. Every so often, a real gardner is to be dispatched and maintain the topiary plants while creating an interesting scene around the building.

om
medical device for fujistu, tokyo, japan
One of GAS’s most substantial and intricate projects is the OM system. After witnessing first hand many people suffering in returning
to a normal life after a calamity: a heart attack, cancer, family deaths, loss of job, work related stress, old age symptoms, and most
recent the 911 attacks in the US. it became clear that many people, including close friends, become almost paralyzed with fear, anxiety,
depression, etc., after such events. The OM system is based directly on assisting: patients in dealing with their symptoms, doctors with
their patients, and drug companies with clinical trials.

intercitta
interactive architecture & system design for cine citta, rome, itlay
Simply: a nation wide, internet connected system of games that can be played on
cell phones, Kiosks, and fully interactive public devices. A user dials the CineCitta system and answers
trivia questions for points. Or “addresses” a movie wall, projected on the side of a building in real-time to answer movie
questions for points. tHE “Match Sticks” game allow users to transfer famous movie images between rotating sticks to gather points transferred to their
cell phones. Technically plausible and
easy to maintain the devices are best for major city centers and shopping areas. The final portion of the CineCitta project was that of “The Pivot
Point”: a self contained transportable location where people come to redeem points for the games that they have won throughout Italy. Dial the
number of the Pivot Point where you are standing, select how much you want to transfer, and then once confi rmed by the pivot point employee, a
user can get merchandise, food, etc. We also designed the Pivot Point to be able to project images onto Buildings and nearby walls or onto itself
as to be a movable movie / media projection system.

GaS design group was founded by two distinct partners born in completely different corners of the globe with
the shared vision to design highly innovative products.
the younger sung was born and spent his early years in the bustling metropolis of seoul, korea, later moving to the
tiny town of kalamazoo, michigan in the united states, where he continued to paint and sculpt and investigating the
world of art. the older gregory was born near the border of a tiny town called prospect in connecticut in the united
states spending his early years ripping apart anything with screws in it, working in research laboratories, machine
shops and running to new york city whenever possible.
in university, feeling the need to put the real world and the academic world to the test, gregory began working as an
engineer in new york city and continued to design and build furniture and objects for architects and designers. he
received his bs in informatics, from the university of connecticut, united states and then completed his concentration
in medieval society, at cambridge university, england later returning to receive a ms in industrial design with commendation,
from domus academy milan, italy. sung began life as a sculptor, designer and visual artist showing and selling his works
internationally from a very early age, completing a bfa in fine arts from the art institute of chicago, and later receiving
a masters degree in design from domus academy in milan, itlay with distinction.
gregory and sung's early careers were as diverse and complementary as can be. for 10 years gregory worked at firms such as
the xerox parc labs, the american management systems center for advanced technology, bankers trust and avero inc. as an
engineer and product strategist. founding next wave partners - a strategy and new product innovation firm - gregory continued
to work with r&d labs, universities and startup organizations such as columbia university, pfizer, mit, the national science
foundation and many others while at the same time continuing to design and producing as many objects as possible. after
completing his military service in seoul korea sung committed himself to the world of art and design working as a designer
and design researcher for the samsung design center in milan, putting his talent to work while gaining worldly perspective
in the field of design.
as time progressed on gregory and sung's work has melded the worlds of art, design and engineering as they worked with
designers such as ico migliore, clino castelli, mario trimarchi, laurence pichon, paolo rizzatto, tim power dante donegani,
shin azumi, and marc sadler. new projects and challenges appeared as gregory and sung collaborated with companies such as
fujitsu, louis vuitton, sunstar, dietiker, samsung, mizar and many others. at the same time gregory and sung remained rooted
in their curious ways and have continued as professors and lectures throughout the us and europe in ba/mba/ms/phd programs
on the topics of design innovation, strategic management, entrepreneurialism and new product development, market research
methods for new product development, 3D modeling, spatial concepts, and aesthetics at institutions such as: the enpc ecole
nationale des ponts et chaussées phd/mba program, paris; the university of connecticut, storrs; european school of economics
in milan, italy; parsons school of design in paris, france; ifm mba in luxury management program in paris, france; lucerne
school of art and design in lucerne switzerland; sook myung university in seoul, korea; the art institute chicago and many others.
